Mr Hermanus (Maans) Pretorius: solid foundations stand the test of time
Mr Maans Pretorius is president of Seadrift Coke, the world’s second-biggest producer of petroleum-based needle coke (the key raw material used in the manufacture of graphite electrodes). Based in Cleveland, Ohio in the United States, he is also a vice president of GrafTech, the electrode manufacturer where he started his career 36 years ago.
Mr Pretorius completed his undergraduate studies at the former Potchefstroom Teachers Training College and the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE). He graduated with a BSc in Chemistry and Botany in 1970 and an honours degree in Plant Biochemistry in 1975, and later obtained his MBA at the Vaal Triangle Campus.
Over the years, Mr Pretorius has held operations and supply chain positions in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Although he has travelled far – geographically and professionally – since his student days, he remembers those times with nostalgia. The foundations built at the NWU have stood the test of time.
