Korean University Honours Campus Rector 

Mafikeng Campus Rector, Professor Dan Kgwadi received an honorary PhD in Management – Honoris Causa from the Hanseo University in South Korea in a ceremony held on 28 June 2010. The Korean University awarded Prof Kgwadi this honorary Doctorate for his contribution in management and enhancement of students` lives at the Mafikeng Campus of North-West University. He has helped lots of students’ access funding and offered his time to help students in their studies. He started this year on a high note by committing to help lecture first year Physics throughout the year. His management skills have helped strengthen the quality of teaching and learning on Mafikeng Campus since his inception as a Rector.   

Professor Kgwadi is the first Campus Rector of the North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, which is part of three Campuses established through the merger of the erstwhile Potchefstroom University (140 years) and the University of the North-West (30 years). Since he started his term as Campus Rector on 1 January 2005 his leadership has been most profound as he continues to guide the Campus through the challenges of transformation in a changing environment.

With unwavering determination, he guides the Campus and facilitates its transformation to a stable and diverse Campus with a vibrant academic and student life as well as financial stability. Through his management skills, he established good relations and partnerships for the Campus locally and internationally.

His career reveals a deep commitment to academic excellence, community services and partnerships with public and local industries. He is passionate about empowering and motivating underprivileged youth. To this record, he sponsored some students through college and university education. Prior to his position as Campus Rector, Professor Kgwadi served as senior manager/ assessment coordinator at the National Nuclear Regulator; head of Physics department at the Vaal University of Technology; Lecturer and head of Physics department at University of North-West; research and teaching assistant at Ball State University and physics teacher at Phatsima High School.

“I stand here today grateful, overwhelmed and humbled by the honour you have bestowed on me” said Professor Kgwadi.  “I receive this honour and dedicate it to the management, staff and students of the North-West University as well as my family.  In response to this honour, I dedicate myself to sponsoring one more student with the underprivileged background to further his /her studies.  To President Ham, Dr Kim and the Hanseo University community, the North-West University values this relationship and thank you for your generosity with the Lokaleng project.  In addition to the kind gesture of your engagement in the village, the Campus prioritized and provided access to six students from Lokaleng to further their studies through the national funding scheme.  The exchange programme and visit of Hanseo University students to our campus is greatly appreciated by the university as it brings an element of diversity that enriches our students’ experience.  We hope that this interaction is equally valuable to your students” he added.

“Lastly, I am privileged to be attached to this prestigious university through this doctorate.  I commit to perform my management duties in a manner befitting this honour.  I will value and cherish my association, officially and personally with this university as long as I live” he concluded.
