NEOUCOM Announces New Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies

Potchefstroom - Cornelis J. (Neels) Van der Schyf, B.Pharm., D.Sc., DTE., has recently been named associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Pharmacy at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM). 

Dr. Van der Schyf remains chair and professor of pharmaceutical sciences and professor of neurobiology, positions he has held since 2006. In his newest role, Van der Schyf will serve as an advocate for the College of Pharmacy’s research and scholarship missions and graduate education while aligning and optimizing college contributions and support for these areas.

Originally from South Africa, Van der Schyf attended Potchefstroom University (now North-West University) where he specialized in organic medicinal chemistry and received his Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master of Science, Doctor of Science, and a graduate diploma in tertiary education. In 2010, he was named extraordinary professor emeritus for the School of Pharmacy at North West University.

 Van der Schyf joined NEOUCOM in 2006 and his dedication to the University was rewarded when he received the 2010 Olson/Blair Award for Administrative Excellence. Van der Schyf has had an abundance of papers and chapters published during his career, leading him to receive the Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Most Cited Paper Award for 2003 through 2006. He also currently serves as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biophysical Chemistry. He is a member of the editorial advisory boards for the Open Medicinal Chemistry Journal and Neurotoxicity Research and has been a peer reviewer for over 30 journals.

 The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) is a community-based, public medical university with a mission to improve the quality of health care in Northeast Ohio working in collaboration with its educational and clinical partners.  With a focus on scientific and medical research, and the interprofessional training of health professionals that is unique to the state of Ohio, NEOUCOM offers a doctor of medicine (M.D.) and a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, in addition to graduate-level coursework and research opportunities leading to master’s and doctoral degrees in other medical areas.  NEOUCOM is a founding member of the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron.
