The University Archives was established in September 1993 for the collection and permanent safekeeping of documents and other material relating to the history of the University.
A university archives is the location where the history of the University can be studied and researched in primary sources pertaining to the university.
Since 2004, when the NWU was established, the Archives, supervised by the Institutional Registar, has been responsible for managing the archival records of the Institutional Office and the Potchefstroom Campus. Support is also given to the archival staff at the Mafikeng and Vaal Triangle campuses.
On 23 November 2007 the Council of the NWU granted approval for the implementation of the Policy on Archives, Museums and Collections that is applicable to all collections at the NWU.
The policies and procedures were prepared in compliance with acts such as the National Archives and Record Service of South Africa Act, Act 43 of 1996 as updated and the National Heritage Resouces Act, Act 25 of 1999.
